Primary Product – Understanding Its Role in Product Relationships

A primary product refers to the main product to which other related products are connected. For instance, if you're searching for a substitute for a discontinued item you currently own, the item you own is considered the primary product.

Types of Related Products

We associate various types of related products with many of our primary products. These include:

  • Upgrades: Enhanced alternatives that offer superior performance compared to the primary product.
  • Accessories: Add-ons that improve or complement the functionality of the primary product.
  • Substitutes: Similar products that can replace the primary product when needed.
  • Supersedes: Updated versions that have replaced the primary product.
  • Related Products: Items from different categories that pair well with the primary product.

How to Browse for Related Products

Option 1: Use the Catalog to Access the Primary Product’s Detail Page

The product detail page is a great starting point to explore any type of related product.

  1. Navigate to the “Products” Main menu.
  2. Select the relevant category (level 1 or level 2) for your primary product.
  3. Browse the subcategories to access a product list, and use filters to refine your search by key attributes.
  4. Identify the primary product you’re interested in and click on it to access the product detail page.
  5. Scroll down the detail page to view all related products linked to the primary product.

Tip: If you believe a relationship is missing, use the feedback link on the product detail page to alert us. This ensures we can update the information promptly for future users.


Option 2: Search for the Primary Product Directly

For a quicker route, use the search functionality to go straight to the product detail page.

  1. Enter the catalog number, Marathon part ID, or your customer part number in the search bar at the top of the page.
  2. Choose one of the following:
    • Select the relevant result from the “type-ahead” suggestions to go directly to the product detail page.
    • Click the search button to view a results page, then select your desired primary product to access its detail page.
  3. Once on the product detail page, scroll down to see all related products associated with the primary product.
